Working from home is not a privilege that everyone has, and those of us who are lucky to have jobs that allow us to wfh are doing so so that the essential workers and those who can't can feel a bit safer going to theirs.
During this pandemic, many of us wfh have been living in our PJs, and for me, athleisure when I actually change into normal clothes, for the past few months now and will probably do so into the summer months. I've always loved fashion and especially enjoy following summer fashion trends and styles but have been putting it aside because fashion and makeup seemed like topics that were just so trivial during this time, and it feels almost disrespectful when I see influencers posting their regular content.
I do think that everyone has their own way of coping during this time though, and for someone who is passionate about fashion, browsing outfit inspirations and current sales online can be a healthy way to destress and keep in touch with their passions. Planning for our summer outfits can also be a great distraction and give us something to look forward to, so here's my take on the biggest summer 2020 trends!
Retro styles from the late '70s and early '80s are making a comeback with bright colors, eye-catching oversized collars, puff sleeves, and sequins but with a modern twist. Many designers have featured pieces with prints with cream, mustard, and yellow hues.
Let me just say that I love the statement-sleeve trend! Whether it's puff sleeves or the oversized Victorian-inspired sleeves, I think they are so feminine and slimming. The milkmaid trend really blew up last spring, and with it, the balloon sleeve trend. I can see that it's still going strong and making its appearance on dresses, light sweaters, and square-neck tops this summer.
The Balloon Sleeve Crop Blouse from NA-KD ($59.95) with a square neckline and pretty puff sleeves and comes in both Off White and Yellow is a perfect way to turn on your charm with this trend. Another great example is this lantern sleeve top that can be worn on or off your shoulders (two looks in one for $59.50!) from Ann Taylor is great for Fridays at the office or the weekend! The fine stripes are flattering for any body type and the feminine lace trim on the elbow raglan sleeves is a super cute touch.
Tie-dye has also been extremely popular as people have been attempting DIY projects to keep themselves entertained and to brighten up their loungewear and pajamas. I wouldn't be surprised if people continue to rock their tie-dye loungewear outside of their homes when the time comes! If you don't feel like getting your hands dirty, Free People's Be Free Tie-Dye Long Sleeve T-Shirt ($58) or the Tie-Dyed Cropped Sweatshirt from Joe's Jeans ($148) both look very comfy.
There's also been a revival of 90s trends especially grunge fashion with combat boots, flannels, and oversized outwear. Footwear brands that were popular in the '90s like Converse, Dr. Martens, or Reebok are being paired with baby tees, girly dresses, or hoodies. I've been so surprised to see a good number of my friends who aren't that into grunge fashion or streetwear buying a new pair of Doc Martens.
Along the lines of the milkmaid trend is the "urban cowgirl" trend that started picking up momentum last fall. The Western-meets-Southwestern look calls for belt buckles, cowboy hats, and fringe jackets. There is sure to be a lot of overlap too with the new prairie girl trend inspired by Little Women, the 2019 film adaptation of the 1868 novel by the same name. You can feel like you've been transported into the classic novel with the romantic Floral Print Midi Dress from Current Air ($145 - currently on sale for $116) or the Feeling Groovy Maxi Dress from Free People ($168).
This summer, we will also see Broderie Anglaise, or open embroidery typically in white floral patterns on fine white cotton or linen, take on a fresh look with more intricate patterns and irregular embroidery. The Freja Embroidered High Waist Shorts from Zimmerman ($375 - currently on sale for $262.50) is a perfect embodiment of this new style. Scotch & Soda also has their own take with the romantic Broderie Anglaise Wrap Dress ($198 - currently 30% off for $138.60) cut from cool cotton eyelet in a ruffle-trimmed and puffed-sleeve silhouette.
I'm a fan of timeless pieces and naturals, so of course, I had to include a couple of dresses and tops from this season which have caught my eye and will always be in style.
I absolutely love the textured Kimono Dress from Current Air ($120 - currently on sale for $96)! It feels laid-back yet looks totally put-together. The only downside is that this dress would be floor length on me if I don't get it altered. Another dress I have my eyes on is the figure-hugging Whisper A-Line Mini Dress from French Connection ($148 - currently 25% off for $111) that is so classic and flattering and perfect for any dressier occasion. This dress might seem really short on those who are taller, but it's perfect for petite girls like me! I also love the Ambrosia Midi Dress from ASTR the Label ($148) that can be dressed down or up for the perfect summer day. The last dress is the Scalloped Hem Dress from English Factory ($82 - currently on sale for $20, WHICH IS SUCH A STEAL!) with an on-trend scalloped hem and long sleeves which just emulates elegance!
Last but not least, let's not forget the accessories! Hair clips, scrunchies, and other dramatic hair accessories were a big hit in the spring, and I don't expect them to disappear as the weather gets warmer. Some of my favorites have been the oversized clips and satin scrunchies from Ettika and the silk neck scarves that double as hair accessories such as this Garden Veil Neckerchief from Tory Burch! I also love all the oversized gold chain necklaces—this is just a trend that never goes out of fashion. They can be layered for a dramatic look or worn by themselves and will compliment any outfit so well. Ettika offers so many options, and their necklaces are so cute and the quality is great.
