Fall 2020 Fashion Trends

Typically, I fondly think of New York Fashion Week (NYFW) as THE event that kicks off the fall season in NYC. Following fashion month in New York, London, Paris, and Milan, editors will examine the trends and release their analysis for the fall season. Of course, fall season this year is a bit different, but that won't stop me from discussing the fall 2020 trends, my favorite collections, essential items, and pieces worth investing in!

Accessorized Pieces

From Bottega's sweater dresses with heavy chain-link necklines to No.21's skirts with belts combos to Miu Miu's maxi dresses with their jewel-encrusted trims, embellished fashions this fall are sure to make a memorable impression on the wearer and those around them.

Bows

This new trend is everywhere this season! For high street fashion brands, we're seeing it in both ready-to-wear and runway looks. Chanel has added bows to their necklines for a polished look, while Celine took on a menswear appeal with bows fastened to the collars of button-down shirts, and Giambattista Valli attached loosely tied bows to their sleeves.

  • The Blanche Tie-Detailed Cable-Knit Wool Sweater from Molly Goddard ($472) taps into this season's trend for classic cable-knits but put its own spin on the trend with cutouts at the shoulders secured with contrasting cotton-twill ties.

  • Smythe's Bow Shoulder Sleeveless Top ($395) is a textured jacquard top in a relaxed A-line cut and capped by pretty bows for a fun, feminine touch.

  • This black and white cotton-blend gingham pussy-bow blouse from RED Valentino ($335) makes a charming choice, thanks to its puff sleeves. If only everything in life was black and white!

  • Cited as one of his main creative inspirations, it is clear that art is a defining factor in Massimo Giorgetti's designs and modern collections. The Oversized Bow Straight Skirt from MSGM ($203), featuring a fuchsia pink cotton blend, high waist, straight fit, and short length is a perfect example!

  • I just love the elegant bow tie fastening the back of this beautiful white and black voluminous sleeve top by Rasario! The White Puff Sleeve Crop Top ($518) is crafted from silk and features a fitted crop top silhouette, a sweetheart neckline, round off-the-shoulder sleeves with elastic cuffs detail, and of course, the bow tie in the back.

  • The Windowpane Check Tie Neck Silk Blouse ($350) from Alice + Olivia, featuring smocked-cuff billowy sleeves and an extra-large bow at the neck, is cut to fit any mood or any look.

Cape

Wearing a cape as a coat has never been more in! Many designers combined this trend with others that are so in this season for their own take on the cape. Michael Kors had their plaid version, Oscar de la Renta's button-embellished capes go perfectly over a tailored knee-length dress, and Isabel Marant's oversized bohemian capes topped off with a belt at the waist are universally flattering.

Fringe

Fringe has made an appearance in past seasons, but now, we've been seeing more of it as a subtle trim on coats or even full-on fringe dresses. I love fringe in the fall; something about the flouncy embellishment is just perfect for the season!

Lingerie

This fall, designers are pushing lingerie as an essential mixing-piece to be worn out. Some of the daring outfits I liked include lacy bodysuits and bralettes over T-shirts or corset-inspired dresses.

  • The Brad Bodysuit from X by NBD ($148) seductive yet sweet with its sexy silhouette, daring cut-outs, and lace overlay details.

  • Nili Lotan's signature slip dresses have been worn by Selena Gomez, Gigi Hadid and Rihanna - the understated silhouettes work for nearly any style! This 'Junie' version ($545) is made from lustrous silk-satin and cut on the bias for a beautiful drape. Suspended from thin adjustable straps, it has a cowl neckline and slit at the hem. Dress it up with your highest pumps or pair it back with slides!

  • The Mesh Insert Corset Bodice Jumpsuit from ASOS DESIGN ($103) is just too edgy!

  • I want a pair of the Intimissimi Silk and Lyocell Pajama Pants ($109) so bad! They look super comfy for a day of running errands or just to lounge around in.

  • Ethereal and dramatic, the sheer Silk Organza Kimono Jacket Top from Eileen Fisher ($190) features a modern oversized cut with dropped shoulders and slit sides.

  • Danielle Guizio is a NYC based brand that embodies the modern day trendsetter, and their Zita Mesh Corset ($108) is a perfect example of the hip and relaxed, yet edgy style they embrace.

Metallics

Metallics are a great way to adorn cozy knits and knee-high boots for a casual stroll around Central Park or illuminate a dinner date dress.

  • The Alexis Metallic Knitted Top in gold ($180) reimagines a classic silhouette with a modern metallic finish. Team yours with a leather jacket and tailored trousers for a contemporary look that will take you effortlessly from day to night.

  • Cut from eye-catching metallic fabric and finished with crisp pleats, the Retrofete Cassie Bodysuit ($395) is a modern take on disco dressing! Finish this striking look with the label's matching Serene skirt and strappy heels.

  • Crafted from breezy plisse knit in a sweeping maxi silhouette, the Retrofete Serene Skirt ($455) has a lustrous finish that will turn heads on the dance floor. Pair it with the label's matching top and strappy heels for a striking statement at your next special event.

  • Katie May's one-shoulder Kong dress ($138) contours to the body in metallic silver plissé.

  • Retrofete's Gabrielle Robe Dress ($615) is a signature mini that delivers exactly what you want if you're planning on taking the party into the wee hours: plenty of shimmery sequins combined with a comfy, wraparound fit!

  • I just love the the Gabrielle Robe Dress from Retrofete ($635) that I wanted to link it in Silver Sequin in addition to the Bronze one above!

'Punk' Plaids

Whether they're on button ups, oversized outerwear, or slinky slip dresses, rebellious plaid prints are getting a happy punk spin on them!

  • The best-selling pants from Amanda Uprichard now comes in plaid! The Tessi Plaid Pant ($195) features a pretty rainbow stitching and paper bag waist with a removable belt. Pair these pants with the Arly Top for day and take this look into night by swapping out the belt with a chain belt!

Sequins

The disco lifestyle of the 70's is making a comeback with head-to-toe sequin dresses, and I'm all here for it!

Shearling

Shearling is a must-have for the fall season whether it be a shearling bomber jacket or full-length coats!

Skirt Suit

Piggybacking off spring's short suits, fall has come out with its own tailoring trend— the skirt suit!

  • The Hartley Textured Pencil Skirt from Reiss ($95) offers tailored simplicity with a classic finish. The pencil silhouette features carefully considered panels and a concealed zip fastening for a flattering wear. Style with colourful casual tops for a high-impact look, or pair with shirts for a formal aesthetic.

  • Reiss' Hayes Wool Blend Cropped Blazer ($435) offers tailored simplicity with a modern finish. The cropped silhouette features chic peak lapels and a single button fastening with front pockets for added functionality. Layover colorful casual tops for a high-impact look, or pair with shirts for a formal aesthetic!

  • The Tailored Ruffle Suiting Top ($250) is a navy sleeveless workwear top with a button down back and crafted from Rebecca Taylor's modern stretch suiting and trimmed with delicate ruffles along the neckline, hem, and shoulders.

  • To match the top is the Tailored Ruffle Suiting Skirt ($250), a classic workwear pencil skirt crafted from Rebecca Taylor's modern stretch suiting and designed with a slim silhouette leading to a mini ruffle hemline.

  • The Vanessa Pencil Skirt with Zip Detail from Reiss ($245) is tailored to a pencil silhouette and features a contemporary zip detail to the sideseam. Wear it with a silk blouse for an on-trend autumn look.

Victorian

The Victorian style was one that I didn't expect to see this season, but I'm slowly starting to get around to the ornate lace, billowing sleeves and skirts, and high-neck tops.
