Although you still can't leave your apartment without bundling up in multiple layers and a thick winter coat (at least in NYC), April May (lol) get here sooner than you think!! It's time to start thinking about ~spring style~ with the new spring collections that have been rolling out since February so that your closet is ready when spring is here.
This year, I really want to avoid over-consumption and be wary about buying pieces that I might only wear once or twice, which means that most of the items I've listed are the ones that I think are the most wearable trends.
According to PopSugar, a female lifestyle brand delivering hot trends and tips in entertainment, fashion, beauty, fitness, and food with 300 million readers every month, bold and bright color trends are in for 2020. Although the colors are all over the place from pastels to ultra-pigmented colors, which actually gives us a nice range to work with since we're no longer restricted to wearing THE color of the season, I've been seeing a lot of products in green shades and specifically, emerald. For a subtler look, you can pair the piece with neutral colors like tan or cream.
Some of the biggest trends this season include business casual (especially incorporating Bermuda shorts instead of pants), pinstripes, influence from the 70's and 80's (such as leather dresses and tube tops), and the utility trend.
I absolutely love the casual take on women's office attire because it gives me an excuse to buy things since "it's for work," but also gives me a chance to wear it outside of the office. The Ann Taylor's Wide Leg Marina Pant, which also come in black, white, and tan if you're not feeling the green, really caught my eye.
The pants come in a classic fit that is lean through the hip and thigh with a high rise waist. The wide leg shape adds to the sophistication of the piece along with the flattering cropped length that is very in this season. I also really like the Faux Leather Pocket Shift Dress in Dark Olive Noir from Ann Taylor. Since I'm pretty short, the relaxed fit is not the most flattering on me, but the faux leather shift dress offers a sleek look for taller gals. It even has front pockets, and who doesn't love a dress with pockets?
The Shira Tiered Tunic from Anthropologie ($138), a tiered tunic that is so swingy and cute, can also be dressed up for the office or down for a casual weekend brunch with the girls. It's available in a classic Black or Emerald that's so in this season.
Retro-inspired clothing such as the Michael Kors collection's Lemon-Print Sleeveless Shirtdress with Belt, which draws on inspiration from the 1970's, is just so fun. The allover lemon print is just toooo cute!
Another flattering print that's making a comeback is pinstripes. The Nina Blouse from L'Agence in an Ivory and Navy Pinstripe is 100% silk and offers a more relaxed take on the classic striped button-down. For the 80's ladies, White House Black Market's Black Coated Denim Dress with a luxe black coating on a signature denim skirt dress is so chic and curve-flattering. Leather played a big role in rock looks in the 80's and still does in rock fashion. The Nappa Bubble Skirt in White from Ferragamo is edgy but feminine with its bubble silhouette.
Moving on, what's an outfit without the perfect pair of shoes to match them or add a fun pop of color given the season's color trend? Here are some of Spring 2020's best shoe trends:
The slingback flat has a classic silhouette that is timeless. The modern loafer this season ups the game from the classic loafer. The Cream Loafers with Horsebit Details from Massimo Dutti is made of leather and features a silver buckle and foldable heels so that the shoes can be worn as mule loafers. Futuristic sneakers with sporty details and a variety of fun colors are also very hot. The Nike Zoom Fly 3 is a great distance running shoe, and the style in the Ocean Cube/Pure Platinum/White/Metallic Silver color combo is perfect for rocking a cool look around town.
